Imagine starting over — not rebuilding a city, but rethinking it entirely from the ground up.

 What if we imagined a world with no familiar categories like “street,” “building,” or even “city”? Freed from these constraints, we could rethink the very idea of space — not as a territory shaped by regulations and infrastructure, but as an environment born from human needs and interactions. 

The starting point of such an approach must be the human being — as the true center of a new reality. Drawing upon psychology, sociology, ergonomics, urban studies, and information technology, we can attempt to design the city anew — not by adding floors or laying streets, but by creating a new quality of life. In this article, we’ll try to look into the future and imagine what a city could become — one built entirely around the human being.

Efforts to reinvent architecture together with daily human life have been made before. In the 1920s, the Soviet Union launched a grand experiment: to create an entirely new type of housing that would reshape how people lived. The old way of life — with its family hearth and private concerns — was seen as a distraction from the worker’s main mission: building communism. The goal was to liberate the individual, especially women, from domestic drudgery, so that they could devote more time and energy to labor in the factory.

However, these projects soon ran into serious problems. Most people didn’t want to give up their familiar routines, their privacy, or the warmth of family life. The idea of living in a commune felt alien, uncomfortable — a denial of individuality. Moreover, the construction and maintenance of such complexes required enormous resources and often proved economically unsustainable.

It’s important to note that this experiment did not place the human being at the center. Quite the opposite: it attempted to turn individuals into cogs within the great mechanism of “building communism,” stripping away personal identity in the name of collective progress. And so, the question inevitably arises: What’s the point of building a “radiant future” if everyone is miserable living in it? A person forbidden to think about anything but the factory, sleeping in a tiny cubicle, sharing bathrooms and cafeterias — this was the “better tomorrow” envisioned by its creators. It’s no surprise that this vision failed.

If the constructivists of the 1920s dreamed of turning people into components of a vast industrial machine, the Khrushchev era sought to restore — however modestly — the right to a private home.

Today, we understand that such an approach has exhausted itself. A comfortable urban environment is not defined by square meters or building codes alone — it’s about the human experience: feeling safe, calm, and in harmony with one’s surroundings.

To create a city where people can truly be happy, we must abandon the traditional dogmas of architecture. Instead of starting from established forms — “street,” “building,” “sidewalk” — we must begin with the living human being and their fundamental needs: psychological, social, and physical. Our goal is to use the combined knowledge of psychology, sociology, ergonomics, and modern technology to redefine what a human environment should be. Below is a framework of the essential dimensions that a city of the future must fulfill.

People should be able to easily control their surroundings — adjust temperature, humidity, and lighting, including natural light — creating a microclimate that fits their own rhythm and habits. An integral part of personal space is a connection with nature: access to fresh air, greenery, natural lighting, and living plants that bring a sense of life and calm. 

This space must also be flexible and adaptive — able to transform as circumstances change, turning from a workspace into a playroom or a quiet retreat. Finally, materials matter. Everything a person touches should feel natural, eco-friendly, and pleasant to the senses. That’s how true comfort and harmony are created — not by technology alone, but by the tactile warmth of the environment itself.

Such environments should offer multiple scenarios — from quiet capsules for deep focus to open areas for discussions, brainstorming, and informal connection. Crucially, workspaces will be integrated into the urban fabric rather than isolated in “business districts.” Today’s model of commuting — home–work, work–home — consumes enormous time and energy. In the city of the future, work, living, and recreation zones will be woven together, reducing the need for daily travel. The goal of such an environment is to stimulate creativity: everyone should have access to workshops, tools, technology, and knowledge that help turn ideas into reality. Ironically, as digitalization and sedentary lifestyles dominate, we may even see a new trend toward physical work — craftsmanship, gardening, and building — as a counterbalance to the virtual world.

For some, this will mean lively spots — cafés, bars, open-kitchen food courts where life buzzes and new friendships form. For others — quiet refuges: reading lounges, tea houses, meditation gardens, or small art galleries that offer peace from the informational noise. 

There will also be dynamic, playful spaces — hobby clubs, sports areas, makerspaces — where people connect through shared passions. A key feature of the city will be transformative zones, spaces that evolve throughout the day: in the morning — walking paths; by day — workout areas; by evening — open-air concert venues. Offline communities will remain vital: from gardeners and artisans to researchers and inventors — all supported with facilities, tools, and spaces for knowledge exchange.

Art and culture become everyday experiences: sculptures, installations, street theater, and performances fill plazas and courtyards, turning the city into a living canvas where new stories are painted daily. A vital part of self-expression will be citizen participation in shaping the city itself.

Public walls for murals, zones for artistic and landscape experiments, and open calls for community initiatives — all give people a sense of authorship over their environment. A city built collectively is valued more deeply by its residents — and as a result, experiences less vandalism.

Streets will transform into spaces for walking, resting, and socializing. High-speed transit — subways, monorails — will move underground or to elevated levels, freeing the surface for life. Urban architecture will follow the principle of intuitive navigation — a city that’s impossible to get lost in. Natural landmarks, logical layouts, and digital assistants will make movement effortless and instinctive.

Physical activity will become a natural part of life — not only through gyms, but through thoughtful infrastructure: welcoming stairways, running and biking paths, outdoor fitness zones, and play areas that encourage organic movement..

Green corridors and planted areas form continuous networks, connecting courtyards, streets, and buildings into a single living organism. Rivers, streams, and groves become natural parts of the urban fabric — not rare oases but essential arteries.

The environment becomes sensory — awakening the human senses: aromatic gardens, the rustle of leaves, the sound of running water, soft surfaces for walking barefoot — all restoring a bodily connection to the world, long lost in concrete jungles.

Energy will come directly from the environment: solar panels on rooftops, wind turbines, and waste-to-energy systems will ensure sustainability and independence. Thus emerges a city that doesn’t oppose nature — but lives in symbiosis with it, as a continuation of nature’s own design.

Yet convenience must not come at the expense of privacy. All data will be collected in anonymized form, serving to improve the city — not to surveil its residents. 

The city of the future will be built on openness and flexibility: both its physical and digital infrastructure will be designed to evolve — ready to integrate new technologies and ideas we can’t yet imagine.

Here’s a glimpse of what a typical day in such a city might look like. We’ll skip the technical details — those are for engineers and planners — and simply show what life feels like in a city designed around the human being.

Usually, he prefers the café in his co-living complex, where he chats with neighbors, but this warm morning tempts him to stay alone with nature.

He could shorten his route using an underground moving walkway, but chooses a stroll instead — a healthy start to the day.

Back home, his AI assistant — linked to the city’s neural network — suggests a public event based on his interests: a lecture analyzing Harry Potter fan fiction.
